What brands are actually putting behind those codes
The most common use is extended labelling, the information that used to require a magnifying glass now lives on a clean mobile page. Ingredient lists with clear allergen highlighting, nutrition tables with daily percentage breakdowns, and disposal guides that show which part of the packaging goes in which bin. Useful, but not exactly exciting.
Where it gets more interesting is origin storytelling. A supermarket own-brand olive oil with a QR code that links to a page showing the specific grove in Andalusia it came from, the pressing date, and the family that produced it. That's a different kind of purchase experience. It doesn't just inform; it justifies the price and builds a relationship with the product that a label never could.
Brands in the health and fitness category have gone further. Protein powder companies link to third-party lab test certificates. Baby food brands link to batch-specific safety records. Supplement manufacturers link to the clinical studies behind their formulations. For categories where trust is the purchase driver, that level of transparency is genuinely competitive.
Some brands have pushed it into loyalty mechanics. Scanning unlocks recipe ideas, early access to new flavours, or entry into a prize draw. None of which require any additional packaging, and all of which create a reason for the shopper to engage beyond the shelf.
The data flow nobody talks about in the aisle
From a brand's perspective, the QR code on packaging does something that supermarket sales data never could: it shows engagement at the individual product level, in real time, from real consumers. Every scan is a signal, this shopper cared enough to reach for their phone. That's a different quality of attention from a passive purchase, and brands are starting to understand what it means.
Scan rates vary enormously by product category. Allergen-sensitive categories like nut products and gluten-free ranges see high scan rates because the stakes are real. Premium products see high scan rates because buyers want to validate their spend. Budget ranges see lower rates because shoppers are less likely to invest time in a product they chose primarily on price.
That data shapes everything from packaging redesigns to range decisions. A flavour extension that nobody scans is telling you something. A product where one in four buyers scans and spends three minutes reading is telling you something very different. The QR code on the shelf is quiet, but the data behind it is not.
